Welcome to my weekly Wednesday Brief flash fiction entry! This is just a free piece of flash fiction (between 500-1,000) words based off of a prompt. I’m part of a wonderful group of flashers 😉 and I’ll have a link to a site where you can read other stories, after my piece.

This week is Radio Static Transmission #11. Jackson Meyer is a 22 year old monster hunter. Blogger and home video extraordinaire, he’s convinced that there are creatures that walk alongside humans. Through his various hunts, adventures and interviews, he finds that he’s right. He’s always been right–there is something that stalks in the shadows. It’s coming for him, and it’s not happy.

“I don’t know what Cade is talking about, I do bite, and I would bite you.” Susan grinned wickedly at him. The expression fell and she groaned, pressing the heels of her hands against her eyes. “I can’t believe I said that out loud.”

“To be completely honest the safer bet is probably the hospital food. I can’t even name the places I’ve been, so you certainly don’t want to put any part of me in your mouth.”

“You’re a bad, bad man.” Susan muttered lowering her hands. “You’re going to give this sixteen year old a heart attack.”

Jackson went back to the table and took his seat opposite Cade. A small pile of brown paper shred was on the table in front of the other man. Cade looked up when Jackson plopped down, a guilty smile crossing his face.

“Everything okay?” More shred were added to the small stack.

“Yeah, he’s out of surgery and driving my other buddy crazy.” Jackson said. His coffee was lukewarm, but tasted all the much better knowing that Killen was okay.

“Can I ask you for a favor?” Cade sat back in his chair, tipping it onto two legs.

“What’s that?”

“It’ll be my treat.” Cade said. The other man shifted his weight, before grinning up through heavily lidded eyes at Jackson.

“Coffee is great.” Jackson shook his head, trying to ignore the flash of heat that ran through him with the sly glance. They walked down the hallway Jackson for once, not wanting to fill the silence with incessant talking. Cade towered over him by at least six inches. Part of him wanted to put Cade side by side with Killen to see who was taller.

He was thoroughly turned around by the time they came to the coffee shop.

Jackson rubbed at the back of his neck. Brody was entirely too calm for his liking. He got to his feet and started to pace, his thoughts tangling and twisting in on themselves. “I mean I’ll double check when I get back to the hotel, but for now I’m almost certain that it saved before the cards went missing.

“Whatever you think is best, man.” Brody said. “I’m going to stay here as long as they let me.”

“They’ll probably kick you out after visiting hours.” Jackson turned, and started back on the path he’d worn into the carpet.

Jackson drove on reflex alone, the scenery passing by in a green blur. The roads were terrible, even when he got off the mountain, the asphalt riddled with pot holes and massive puddles. He gripped the steering wheel tightly, knuckles white as Killen’s dried blood flaked off his skin. He had one focus, a repetitive ‘get to the hospital’ running as a mantra through his mind.

He wasn’t sure how he got to the one story hospital without an accident. The only laws he had obeyed were the red lights, knowing arriving on a gurney wouldn’t help Killen or Brody.

Three ATVs burst into the clearing, the rangers disembarking quickly. They made their way over to Jackson and the others. Jackson listened half paying attention, mainly focused on Killen as the rangers and Brody talked in rapid fire medical jargon.

“Jackson,” Brody cut in, he was on his feet, offering a blood soaked hand to him. “I’m going with them. You go with the other ranger and break down camp. Jackson allowed Brody to pull him up.

“Is he going to be okay?” He stared wide eyed as one of the rangers put together a way to carry Killen out.

The uneven ground proved even more difficult as they scrambled from the nest and the tree line. Brody grabbed Jackson’s elbow, “Wait.”

“I don’t see anything. We should make a dash for it.” Killen’s voice was low and steady, eyes wide, tracking everything. “Keep the camera on though, brother.” Seconds passed before Killen took off, darting out from the safety of the trees and bolting across the clearing.

Brody counted his breath, Jackson could hear him counting seconds under his breath. When Killen had gotten halfway across, Brody had hit ‘thirty’, shifted his pack and tore after the tall blond.
