Welcome to my weekly Wednesday Brief flash fiction entry! This is just a free piece of flash fiction (between 500-1,000) words based off of a prompt. I’m part of a wonderful group of flashers 😉 and I’ll have a link to a site where you can read other stories, after my piece.

First Second Third

The breeze tugged and played with my hair, and I breathed deep the scent of the evergreen trees. I wanted to warp myself up in the sunshine and grass and imprint the feeling of warmth and green in my skin. Another deep breath that caught in my throat, a hiccupy sob as tears fell, the sadness of not knowing this simple joy for so long in my life. I sat on the cool stump the feeling of wood worn smooth from the elements under my fingers grounding me as I gave in to the tears.

“That feeling doesn’t go away.”

“Good.” Her hand moved against mine, our fingers interlocking. “Take a deep breath, close your eyes, and hold onto me.” I could feel her magic seeping from the gem at her throat. It was warm, comforting, creeping along my skin the way flame takes paper. I could hear the mechanical whir of the generators starting up once more.

“Astrid?”

There was a loud rush of air, the feeling of being pulled violently away from everything. Astrid’s grip was tight on my hand, despite the ferocious wind that battered at us. I pried open one eye to see nothingness staring back.

Her full lips curved upward into a warm, gentle smile. Her hands were warm as they clasped my own, pulling me across the bed, closer to her, moving from the shadows the fringes of the delicate light that emanated from the transport gem. “I’ve come to take you away.”

“I can’t leave. Travel by the Touched is expressly forbidden.” I couldn’t find my voice, that all that came past my lips was a hoarse whisper. “They will kill you,” and make me watch, was left unsaid.

We all know the rules, they’re burned into our psyche at a young age.

Three days after my eighteenth birthday, my parents tried to kill me. They didn’t even have the shame to be subtle about it, and I don’t blame them. The second of three children, my older brother disowned and in hiding, they had a social responsibility to destroy their second mistake. By any means necessary. I survived the gunshots, the attempted poisonings, the ‘therapy’, that was little more than beatings and torture. I went through two room-mates, still proud of what I was, until the third lay bleeding on the concrete floor, convulsing, spit and brains leaking from their open mouth.

Dark gray blotted out the blue dome of the sky, the brilliant blaze of sunshine disappearing behind dense, twisting clouds. The spray of salt on the air burned her nose, her hair tumbling and tangling with the breeze that stirred off the water. Under her feet the wooden ship creaked and groaned, pitching as waves buffered it. There was an electrical undercurrent on the air, the magic dancing on the tip of her tongue, flowing through her veins, mixing with her blood. It was a ruse, to get those unable to fight out of open water.

She welcomed the fight.

Time of Reckoning
Layla and Diane are assigned as partners on a massive school project. The two young women, different in their own ways, will find that they’re connected on a level that no one expected. They’ll face their darkest nightmares, and hopefully come out of it with high marks, and their souls in tact.

She laughed, pushing wayward strands of hair out of her face. “As unbelievable as this is, Grady isn’t that bad, I can handle my own against him.”

“Yes, but why would you want to?” I said as I filled out the research proposal sheet. “To call him abrasive would be a compliment.” Making sure my handwriting was legible I filled in the lines on the form, signed my name, and turned it toward Layla who signed and dated it as well.

“I have Faden for homeroom, do you want me to turn it in then?” She asked. “No big deal.”

The girl behind the counter at the café smile patiently at me as I dug through the wad of receipts at the bottom of my school bag. Reluctantly I upended the satchel onto the counter, pennies and change rolling away like prisoners fresh from a jail break. I found the crumpled lump of bills and separated them out, face burning with embarrassment, handing over enough to cover my total. Scooped everything back into my bag and slung it over my shoulder.

Then I pretended not to care that she was looking at me like I just sprouted a second head. Continue reading
